All Digital Pianos

Being a real piano shop we feel that it’s important to offer our customers the very best digital pianos available on the marketplace.

Our customers enjoy the opportunity of comparing them side by side with real grand and upright pianos. With this in mind, we have chosen from the worlds leading digital piano manufacturers Kawai and Yamaha Clavinova.

The digital piano which used to be known as an electronic piano and which is sometimes referred to as a keyboard first came to the market place over 40 years ago.

The instrument was designed to be an alternative to a traditional piano and not a replacement. Clearly, since the early days the digitals have improved tremendously and now the latest generation of technology is formally accepted by leading authorities the world over.

Digital pianos have a lower cost to traditional pianos, take up less space, never need tuning, produce other sounds and have many other useful features to assist with learning.

And most importantly they feel like a traditional piano, providing that you choose certain brands of course. The digital piano actions are weighted which means that the keys are heavy, just like a traditional piano.

This is something that your piano teacher will be most insistent on. The sound of a digital piano is created by technology called harmonic imaging or sampling. In other words, the sound is recorded from a live concert grand piano. Each individual note. The digital samples are stored and then used.

FAQs

Are digital pianos as good as real acoustic pianos?

Modern digital pianos can replicate the touch, tone, and dynamic range of acoustic uprights and grands very closely. They excel in consistency, headphone output, and maintenance-free operation, though purists may still prefer the natural resonance and sympathetic string vibrations of a fine acoustic instrument.

What is the difference between electric pianos and digital pianos?

Electric pianos generate sound mechanically—hammers striking tuned metal tines or reeds—then amplify it electronically. Digital pianos produce sound purely through digital sampling or modeling of acoustic or electric piano sounds.

Do digital pianos need to be tuned?

No. Digital pianos use sampled or modeled sounds stored electronically, so their pitch remains constant and drifts. There’s no tuning mechanism to adjust.

What are the benefits of digital pianos?

  • No tuning or voicing required

  • Volume control and headphone jacks for quiet practice

  • Wide variety of sounds (e.g., organ, strings)

  • MIDI/USB connectivity for recording and learning apps

  • Often more compact and lighter than acoustic pianos

Can I record with a digital piano?

Yes. Built-in MIDI and USB ports let you record directly into DAWs or notation software. Some models include onboard recording functions for quick captures.

Can you tell the difference between an acoustic piano and a digital piano?

In isolation—especially via headphones—most people cannot distinguish a high-end digital piano from an acoustic instrument. Onstage or in recording, subtle differences in resonance and pedal response may be more noticeable.

Should I buy a digital piano or an upright piano?

Choose a digital piano if you need portability, volume control, onboard sounds, and low maintenance. Opt for an upright acoustic if you prioritise organic resonance, traditional touch nuances, and investment in fine woodwork.

Does a digital piano sound like a regular piano?

High-end digital pianos use multi-layered, high-resolution samples and modeling to recreate the expressiveness, overtones, and dynamic response of acoustic pianos, making them nearly indistinguishable in most settings.

How long do digital pianos last?

With normal home use and proper care, a digital piano’s key action and electronics can last 15–25 years. Lack of moving strings and soundboards means fewer wear issues than with acoustics.

What is the best digital piano?

The best model depends on needs and budget. For weighted-key realism and graded hammer action, top choices include Yamaha Clavinova series and Kawai digital pianos. Both brands have a reputation for their consistent lead in key action, sound quality, build, and feature sets.

Does a Yamaha Clavinova feel like a real piano?

Yes. Clavinova models use graded hammer action, synthetic ivory/ebony textured keys, and VRM (Virtual Resonance Modeling) to simulate a grand-piano feel and tone very closely.
