The upright piano also known as the acoustic piano has been in existence since the 1700s and to this day it is still the main choice of pianists the world over. Over the years, thousands of uprights have been produced and even now, many that are over a 100 years old are still being played to the satisfaction of their owners. Piano manufacturers have, of course, refined their approaches and techniques. Cabinet sizes have been reduced, keyboard actions have been improved, and the instruments overall have become much more reliable. Generally, they stay in tune better and for longer, and are able to cope far more satisfactorily with the features of modern living, such as central heating.
