Later, when I wanted to upgrade to a better model, I returned to the Piano Man. Mark and the rest of his team (Oliver and David) once again excelled in customer service. I spent many hours over numerous days playing every piano in the shop (quite a lot!) and eventually (with their help and advice) I settled on the excellent Kawai K600. Including the trade-in on my old Kawai, and a generous price reduction on the K600, I got an overall very competitive deal, with which I am totally satisfied.
In summary, there is only one shop that I would recommend to anyone looking to buy a new or second-hand piano, and that is the Piano Man in Leeds!

I found out about the Pianoman in 2018, when I was looking for a 7-foot grand piano. After an extensive international search, I was looking forward to my first opportunity to test a Shigeru Kawai of that size, motivated by the excellent … More impression I had of their smaller models.I first visited the Pianoman in November 2018 but only found Shigeru Kawai's SK2 models. I gave my contact to Oliver on that day, in the hope that he would let me know if he hears of a larger Shigeru Kawai available to try. In April 2019, I received an extraordinary email from Mark telling me that he had just ordered an SK6. This news impressed me a great deal, particularly since my search experience had started to make me doubt the ability of piano dealers to listen to their customers but also because I imagine that bringing in such an instrument was a somewhat risky business move.I tried SK6 #2708291 at the first opportunity: it reminded me of the qualities I found in SK2 and SK3 but with the advantages of a larger instrument. The action surpassed that of any other piano I tried of that size: it was highly controllable down to the softest pianissimi, produced perfectly balanced sound across registers. The instrument was capable of a large dynamic range without ever being difficult to control. This last quality, rare even amongst top tier instruments, makes it easier to correct technical deficiencies when practising and played an important role in my decision-making process. Acoustically, as for any instruments of this quality, it is mostly a matter of personal preference. This particular instrument had a warm bass evolving progressively towards a clear and singing treble and suited me very well. Having been the front-runner in my shortlist since I first tested it, especially due to its outstanding action, SK6 #2708291 became more and more the obvious choice with each visit and I am now in possession of the perfect instrument to further my pianistic abilities.Mark and Oliver never failed to make me comfortable during my many visits. They were present to answer questions when I needed and let me try their pianos in complete privacy. When I started contemplating the purchase, they brought in their favorite piano technician, David, to prepare the piano so that I could try it in the best conditions. He did a remarkable job, both on the action and the tuning, and I am happy to continue with his services onward.Since the sale, Mark has always been available (even during lockdown) to advise me on how to best care for my piano. The Pianoman has never provided me with less than excellent service and I recommend it highly to any pianist.

Despite being made to feel … More very welcome on arrival, it soon became clear that most of the prices were fairly top-end and the shop appeared somewhat cramped. I could not find what I was looking for and was expecting to find a greater selection of pianos within my price range; I was disappointed to say the least. At this point in my visit I can only describe what were high pressure sales techniques being used and the whole experience became awkward. I appreciate that the current financial climate is difficult, but, I did not appreciate the confrontational insistence of the seller. Although I'm sure not everyone will experience this, I was relieved to leave the shop.

After visiting several places in the Leeds city centre area and Bradford area I was becoming a bit disenchanted and overwhelmed with the differing amount of information and assistance I was being given bearing in mind I was working within a £3K - 4K budget. How hard could it be? Then, one night, whilst idly looking on-line at pianos, I came across The Pianoman's massively extensive website. If only I'd found this earlier. Clearly, if the website was anything to go by I was going to be impressed by the premises, so I ventured over to Easterly Rd near Oakwood in North Leeds. The usual parking problems associated with City Centre shopping did not apply here and I was able to park right outside the shop, recently extended, Mark told me, to house an extensive array of nice shiny Kawai grand pianos. Unfortunately, I was not going to buy one of those today but, in the future, who knows?..... Anyway, I explained to Mark what the teacher had suggested and he went to great lengths to explain the varying types, feel, and quality of the products without making me feel in the slightest bit inadequate, bearing in mind my knowledge of pianos is limited to knowing the keys at the bottom are a lot lower in sound than the ones at the top! My 15 year old son was a little too self conscious to experiment in front of him so Mark patiently showed us round all the pianos within our price range, playing beautifully for us, whilst also pointing out the subtle differences in tone and touch, etc. After much deliberation (but with no high pressure sales pitches from the proprietor!) we finally settled on a second hand Kawai which had only recently been brought in as a part exchange, apparently. The beauty of this meant that there was sufficient funds remaining in our budget to enable us to buy a small digital piano so that my son can practice in his room with headphones on as he gets older! The digital arrived in stock very quickly so both pianos were delivered to us within a week of purchase. Marks delivery guys made it look so easy as they had to up end the piano in the hall to get it in to the room - no problem, and they very kindly took the boxed digital upstairs and assembled it for me. All in all, a great experience from start to finish. Highly recommend.

They are friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable, and helpful, and they let me try a wide range of pianos, all of which … More were a pleasure to explore. I found trying the uprights rewarding as well as informative. However, I have a grand piano and have more experience with a wider range of grands than of uprights. So, I was particularly interested in trying the grands. I was very impressed indeed with the quality of them. After my visit I received additional insightful advice from Oliver. I would recommend a visit to the Piano Man shop to anyone looking for a good upright or grand and living in Yorkshire or beyond.

I have played piano all my life but bought my first Kawai piano at the Piano Man in Leeds about ten years ago (on the strong recommendation from a jazz pianist friend of mine). The owner Mark provided me with all the information and advice … More that I required and guided me towards the sort of piano that he believed would best suit my style, ability and price range. I was definitely not disappointed with the service!
Later, when I wanted to upgrade to a better model, I returned to the Piano Man. Mark and the rest of his team (Oliver and David) once again excelled in customer service. I spent many hours over numerous days playing every piano in the shop (quite a lot!) and eventually (with their help and advice) I settled on the excellent Kawai K600. Including the trade-in on my old Kawai, and a generous price reduction on the K600, I got an overall very competitive deal, with which I am totally satisfied.
In summary, there is only one shop that I would recommend to anyone looking to buy a new or second-hand piano, and that is the Piano Man in Leeds!
