The Yamaha U30A is a premium Japanese built upright piano and a refined variation of Yamaha’s famous U3 model.
Manufactured in Japan in 1992, the U30A shares the same impressive 131cm height as the Yamaha U3, with longer strings and large soundboard that help produce the powerful bass, projection and tonal depth for which Yamaha’s full-size professional uprights are renowned.
Originally produced for the Japanese domestic market, the U30A sits within Yamaha’s higher specification professional upright range and offers a particularly interesting alternative for anyone considering a traditional Yamaha U3.

Yamaha U30A vs Yamaha U3 – What’s the Difference?
The Yamaha U30A can essentially be thought of as an upgraded and refined variation of the standard Yamaha U3.
Both pianos stand at 131cm tall and were manufactured by Yamaha in Japan, but the U30A was originally produced for the Japanese domestic market with a higher specification and refinements to its construction and internal components.
For somebody already considering a second-hand Yamaha U3, the U30A is therefore particularly interesting. You retain the size, power and familiar characteristics that have made the U3 one of the world’s best-known upright pianos, but in a less commonly encountered, higher-specification Japanese model.
Ultimately, however, with any piano over 30 years old, the individual instrument matters more than the model number alone. Condition, maintenance, preparation, touch and tone should always be considered when comparing one piano with another.
What Our Expert Says
The Yamaha U30A is one of those models that many customers won’t necessarily have heard of before visiting a specialist piano dealer.
Most people looking for a full-size used Yamaha naturally start by searching for a Yamaha U3, but the U30A shouldn’t be overlooked. The U30A offers the same substantial 131cm size, combined with the specification and refinement associated with Yamaha’s Japanese domestic market instruments.
If you’re considering a good-quality Yamaha U3, we’d recommend playing this U30A alongside it. The differences in tone, touch and character are much easier to appreciate at the piano than they are by comparing specifications online.
