Digital Piano Delivery & Collection Guide

Digital Piano Delivery or Collection – Which is Right for You?

Buying a new digital piano is exciting, but before deciding how you would like to receive your new instrument, there are a few practical things worth considering.

Not all piano deliveries are the same – and there is quite a difference between a box arriving at your address and having your new piano delivered, assembled, positioned and checked in your home.

Thinking of collecting and assembling it yourself?

Digital pianos are supplied by the manufacturers in boxes and, in most cases, require assembly. You will sometimes see this described online as “flat-packed for easy self-assembly.”

It is certainly possible to assemble a digital piano yourself, but we think it’s worth understanding exactly what is involved before making that decision.

Ask yourself:

How physically fit and able are you?

Digital pianos are substantial musical instruments. Depending upon the model, the boxes can be large, heavy and awkward to manoeuvre.

Will you have somebody capable of helping you?

For many models, this really isn’t a one-person job. Once the cabinet and stand have been assembled, carefully lifting and positioning the main piano section can require two people.

Do you have a suitable vehicle?

The packaging for a digital piano can be considerably larger than customers expect. You need to be certain that the boxed instrument will fit safely inside your vehicle.

How close can you get that vehicle to your front door?

Getting the piano into your vehicle at our showroom is only half the journey. Think about what happens when you arrive home. How far does it need carrying? Are there steps, gravel, narrow paths, stairs or tight doorways to negotiate?

What does “delivery” actually mean?

This is another important question when comparing prices online.

Some larger internet retailers use general courier networks to deliver digital pianos. That can mean your piano arriving with one delivery driver and a sack trolley, rather than a two-person specialist piano delivery team.

Depending upon the courier and the service purchased, the driver may only be contracted to deliver to your doorstep or driveway and may not be able to take the instrument into your home. With a large and heavy digital piano, the customer can therefore find themselves unexpectedly being asked to help or left with the problem of getting a substantial boxed instrument from the doorstep or driveway to where it actually needs to go.

We also believe there is an important consideration here beyond convenience.

A boxed digital piano is still a musical instrument containing precision electronic and mechanical components. Large, heavy boxes need to be handled with care. In our view, moving an instrument of this type through a general parcel network and handling it as a one-person delivery presents a greater risk of the packaging and potentially the instrument inside being damaged.

That’s why we believe it is worth asking any retailer not simply:

“Is delivery included?”

but:

“Exactly what type of delivery am I getting?”

Why are digital pianos supplied flat-packed?

It is worth clearing up a common misconception.

Digital pianos aren’t primarily flat-packed because manufacturers have designed them to make life easier for customers assembling them at home. Packaging them in this way makes it far more practical and efficient because the boxes are smaller and therefore it is easier for manufacturers to transport thousands of instruments from their factories around the world.

At The PianoMan, we have assembled thousands of boxed digital pianos over the years. For us, assembly is relatively straightforward because we know precisely how the instruments fit together, how they should be handled and what to look for.

For somebody assembling one for the first time, it can be a rather different experience.

We carefully deliver your new piano to your home, take it to the room where you want it, professionally assemble and position it, check that everything is working correctly and remove all the packaging when we’ve finished.
